Operating Home Based Businesses in City Square
 
City Square Homes are for residential use. Many home-based businesses that do not attract more vehicle traffic are allowed in City Square- but many are not. Please review the City of McDonough Code and Information for what types of businesses are allowed to legally operate from home. City Square covenants require all residents to comply with local and applicable laws.  Businesses found to be in Violation are subject to fines.
 
Air BNB and daily or weekly rentals are not allowed.

Obtain an Occupational Tax Certificate (Business License)
 
1. Obtain an Occupational Tax Certificate (Business License):
  • All businesses, including home-based ones, must register with the Occupational Tax Office within 30 days of starting operations.
  • The application requires completion, notarization, and submission along with:
    • Valid government-issued photo identification.
    • Proof of citizenship (e.g., birth certificate or valid U.S. passport).
    • Federal Tax Identification Number or Social Security Number.
    • Any applicable state licenses.

2. Ensure Zoning Compliance
  • Home-based businesses are typically limited to administrative functions and must not alter the residential character of the neighborhood.
  • To verify that your business complies with zoning regulations, complete the Zoning and Land Use Verification Form for Home-Based Businesses.

3. Understand Operational Limitations
  • Home occupations should
    • Be conducted entirely within the dwelling by residents.
    • Not change the residential character of the home.
    • Not involve external displays, stock-in-trade, or non-resident employees.
    • Use only equipment typical for domestic purposes.
    • Occupy no more than 15% of the total floor space of the dwelling.
  • Certain professions, such as physicians or lawyers, may conduct consultations or emergency treatments but not general practice from the home.
